The tablet above might look quite alike the Microsoft Surface but its not and it not just another clone either. It’s called the Ultra Tablet, which has been engineered by three ex-Google seniors engineers namely Jeremy Zhou, David Ko, Ben Luk. They worked on Google Search, Google AdWords and Google Maps while they were at Google but they left and formed Jide Technology in 2014. According to them,
We can’t stand the drawbacks of the tablets and laptops on the market today and we wanted to do something about it. Our hardware & software staff have top-notch backgrounds including from Google, Microsoft, Baidu, Amazon, Sony, ST-Ericsson, Sohu and etc, while our design team consists of the best & brightest within their industry. We are singularly focused on innovating the most useful mobile device in the world.
Ultra Tablet is an Android-based tablet that comes with a magnetically attachable keyboard and a kickstand. It has a 11.6-inch Full HD (1080P) IPS display and the kickstand supports two positions (40º and 80º angles). At its core is a 1.81Ghz NVIDIA Tegra 4+1 A15 processor, GeForce ULP 72 GPU and a 2GB RAM. For storage, we’ve a 64GB eMMC internal storage which can be expanded with a microSD card (up to 128GB). Although I don’t find the back camera of much use on a tablet but this one has 5MP cameras on both, the front and the back of the tablet.
Not only is it similar to the Microsoft Surface hardware-wise but it’s software — the Remix OS — also copies many aspects from the Microsoft’s metro design. Remix OS is an Android derivative specially designed for the Ultra Tablet. Although Remix OS has almost anything that an Android tablet has but it has some additional features as well like multi-window support and the Remix taskbar. Multi-window support in the Remix OS allows to run apps in Phone mode, hence allowing multiple apps to run on-screen, at the same time. To provide somewhat PC like experience, Remix taskbar is at bottom of the screen that displays and allows your to switch between currently running applications.
Ultra Tablet is in production now to be sold into the Chinese market at first. You can expect it to make its way into the U.S. or U.K. market by Q2/Q3 2015 at a starting price of 349 USD (~35,000 PKR) for the 16GB model.
